Mental health supplements are mainly used for improving brain function and relieving depression. However, they can also help treat numerous conditions, including heart disease since the brain controls virtually everything.
For instance, hypothalamus which is the master gland located in the brain, controls other endocrine glands and hormonal production in the body.
On the other hand, blood pressure and heart rate are controled by other parts of the brain such as medulla oblongata. Although the brain is composed of many parts from which everyone has its own job, they all work together.
By taking care of your brain, you can improve function of cardiovascular, digestive, endocrine, immune, lymphatic, muscular, nervous and respiratory system, besides brain function and stress control.
It is quite amazing for one organ to have such immense effect on our body and general well-being.
LIST OF MENTAL HEALTH SUPPLEMENTS
I have tried most of so called brain supplements from which some worked great, while others did absolutely nothing.
Fish oil - Although I started taking it due to my heart problems, I also noticed improvment in my mood and ability to think more clearly.
Vitamin B12 & B6- When I first started taking supplements, one of the first things I bough was multivitamin. However, I prefer getting my vitamins and minerals from whole foods, now. However, in certain cases vitamin supplements can be viable solution.
Vitamin D3 - This is only type of vitamin which I take in a form of supplement since it is hard to get enough vitamin D from the food alone, especially if you have dark skin or don't get enough sun exposure.
SAM-e - This is one of the most useless mental health supplements, in my opinion. I didn't experienced nothing, while taking it.
Acetyl-L-Carnitine - I really don't like this one since I experienced tingling sensations in my thyroid area, after taking it but it may be helpful for some people.
Carnosine - Same as with Acetyl-L-Carnitine.
GABA - It helped me calm down a bit but only when taken in higher amounts through supplements. However, I prefer increasing my own natural production of GABA, rather then adding it through supplements.
Cat's Claw - Clinical studies have shown that the herb is able to repair DNA demage and modulate immune system function. However, it shouldn't be taken in higher doses.
Huperzine A - I really like this one. It is supposed to work as acetylcholinesterase inhibitor thereby elevating the levels of neurotransmitter acetylcholine and boosting its effects.
Bacopin - It works great in combination with Huperzine, by improving learning and memory as well as mental clarity by easing the tension.
Carotenoids - Most of the time, I get enough carotenoids from my diet but during summer I tend to take some kind of supplements due to sun exposure. They can help improve brain function but don't go overboard with these kind of supplements.
L-Theanine - It does have relaxing effect as well as some other mental health supplements but it is not one of my favorites. However, I still get it through my supplements and diet.
Relaxing herbs - They can help improve brain function in the long run, by relaxing the brain and aiding in recovery process.
Adaptogens - I am a huge fan of them since they work in so many ways. For instance, by relieving and increasing our resistance to stress, they can help you think more clearly.
Ginkgo - It is great herb for people with heart problems as well as for improving blood flow to the brain.
Chamomile - It very unique herb with rich nutritional content which can help relax central nervous system.
Vinpocetine - It is a good supplement for improving brain function, from my experience. However, since it can decrease the number of white blood cells and weaken immune system, its not my favorite.
Phosphatidylserine - It is certainly effective but only in high doses because of which it is not one of the most cost-effective mental health supplements out there.
Alpha Lipoic Acid - Not a big fan of ALA but it can be useful for people above the age of 40.
Choline supplements - I have tried several types of choline, including Citicoline, Alpha GPC and Phosphatidyl Choline. Although I had big expectation about some of them, all of them were a waste of money, in my case.
Stimulants - They are very effective in increasing energy and learning ability but they are not the best option if you have heart disease. Also, some of them are stronger than others. For instance, coffee is very powerful stimulant due to its rich caffeine content.
WHICH MENTAL HEALTH SUPPLEMENTS I TAKE
After taking and trying so many supplements, I managed to found the right one for my brain. I am talking about Neurozyme from New Chapter.
Neurozyme consists of numerous herbal extracts which includes relaxing herbs, adaptogens such as Ashwagandha, mild stimulants such as Gotu Kola, immune balancers such as Cat's Claw as well as other mental health supplements.
After taking one softgel per day for a week, I experienced this amazing feeling of tranquility and calmness. It is something similar to feeling sleepy but the difference is that you are not sleepy, at all but extremly relaxed.
Also, Neurozyme contains fish oil and several herbs that are great source of some very unique flavonoids which are good for the heart and the brain.
UPDATE: Neurozyme is no longer available. When I contacted the company this was their response: "It was with great sadness that we had to discontinue our Neurozyme.
Unfortunately our manufacturing partners are no longer able to produce to New Chapter's design and specification."
If you know about any similar product, please let me know, via the contact link at the bottom of the page. Thank you!
MENTAL HEALTH SUPPLEMENTS - NEW FORMULA
I found a new supplement for the brain. I am taking about Alpha Brain made by Onnit Labs. It has three main ingredients that I found highly effective.
This includes Bacopa, Cat's Claw (AH-11) and Huperzine A, besides few other promising ingredients such as Pterostilbene and Phosphatidylserine.
Although Neurozyme is still number one for me, this one came very close. While taking it, I didn't experienced the same feeling of tranquility. However, I was able to think and react a little bit faster, like I was on caffeine but without the jitters.
Also, I experienced some crazy dreams while taking it. Company offers free risk trial for the new customers. If you don't like it or you find it ineffective, you can ask for your money back.
